Private Country Estate

Overview

  • To install a “site wide” renewable energy district heating system
  • To cater for all heating and hot water requirements for all seven properties, ranging from an over three hundred year old, grade two listed barn conversion, to a large new build domestic dwelling
  • To provide heating to an internal swimming pool

Solution

Installation of a 335 kilowatt ETA biomass boiler system at a country estate. The system will heat all seven of the properties, totalling around four thousand square metres, together with an internal swimming pool. The properties range from an over three hundred year old barn conversion, to large domestic houses that exceed current building regulations. Approximately one mile of insulated pipe work has been installed underground, in order to up the district heating system from a single purpose-built plant room, housing the biomass boiler system and fuel stores. The boilers will run using both pellets (purchased from external suppliers), and chips, which will be harvested from the state’s own woodlands.

The solution installed has two separate boilers which provide the system with contingency for servicing times, and in order to maximise the efficiency, as only one boiler will be required in summer months to cater for the swimming pool and site-wide hot water usage.

Although the biomass system is heating domestic properties, it qualifies for the commercial renewable heating incentive (RHI) as it is heating more than one dwelling. The payments for commercial RHI are paid over twenty years and are indexed to inflation, providing a very good return on investment (RoI).
